Mariah Harris is a freelance operations strategist and the founder of Freelance Systems, a consultancy that helps independent professionals build repeatable processes for client acquisition, onboarding, and delivery. Over the past twelve years, she has worked with more than two hundred freelancers across design, development, writing, marketing, and consulting disciplines — from solo practitioners earning their first five-figure year to established agency owners scaling past seven figures.
Her approach to freelance operations is rooted in a simple observation: most freelancers have deep expertise in their craft but minimal training in running a business. Mariah bridges that gap by translating traditional business operations frameworks into practical systems that respect the autonomy and flexibility that drew people to freelancing in the first place.
Before founding Freelance Systems, Mariah spent six years as a freelance brand strategist, where she developed and refined the onboarding methodologies featured in this book. Her own experience of losing money on poorly structured projects, chasing payments from disorganized clients, and burning out from inconsistent workflows became the laboratory for the systems she now teaches.
Mariah has been featured in *Freelancer Magazine*, *The Creative Independent*, and *The Freelance Report*. She speaks regularly at industry conferences including the Freelance Business Summit and the Creative Operations Conference. She lives in Portland, Oregon, with her partner and two rescue dogs, and she still takes on a handful of consulting clients each year to stay connected to the day-to-day realities of freelance life.
When she's not helping freelancers build better systems, Mariah can be found testing new project management tools, reading business psychology research, or hiking the Columbia River Gorge with her dogs. She believes that the best business systems are the ones you barely notice — because they're working exactly as they should.
